Elephants of Asia

When Thailand cut back on logging, at least 3,000 domesticated elephants were no longer needed for hauling and these wonderful creatures are facing unprecedented survival challenges. This amazing art is being sold to help save the demising number of Asian elephants remaining on our planet and to protect them from people using them for illegal logging or begging for handouts on city streets. Proceeds are used to keep their native habitats as well as caretaker education, veterinarian care, and food for domesticated elephants. Positive behavioral training techniques and non-toxic paints are used for the elephant to create her own style of painting with her mahout and art teacher.

Somjai

This is my self portrait painted by elephant artist, Somjai, from Maetaman Elephant Camp in Chiang mai Northern Thailand. Somjai is a 14 year old male elephant and is a gentle giant, as well as being friendly and social with all his buddies. He started painting at age 10 and was a natural and quickly learned to paint flowers. He loves his elephant friends so much that it came as no surprise when he quickly used his skills to paint realistic pictures of fellow elephants. Somjai's talent is as big as his heart.

Boombim

This is Lavender Floral painted by elephant artist, Boombim, from Maetaman Elephant Camp in Chiang Mai Northern Thailand. Boombim is a highly confident 8 year old female elephant. According to her trainer, Ngiam, her confidence turns to stubbornness at times. However, she is also very expressive in her happiness and makes loud noises to show her enjoyment. Being such an expressive elephant, she was meant to be artist and after 2 years she is painting beautiful, realistic pictures. Painting is very relaxing for Boombim. She gets a bath before practicing, then indulges in bananas and sugarcane afterwards.

Thong Phun

This is Blue Wild Orchid painted by elephant artist, Thong Phun, from Maetaman Elephant Camp in Chiang Mai Northern Thailand. Thong Phun is a talented abstract and realistic painter in Thailand with a very unique style compared to other elephant artists. He is a 7 year old male and is adorable!

Jaab

This is Bonsai painted by elephant artist, Jaab, from Maetaman Elephant Camp in Chiang Mai Northern Thailand. Jaab is a vivacious 8 year old male elephant and he loves to play with his elephant friends and seems to like everybody. This agreeable nature helped Jaab when he started learning to paint five years ago. Of course, the rewards of corn (his favorite food) also was a great motivator. With his art teacher, Khun Tossapol Petcharattanakool, and caretaker, Mr. Phat Singbood, Jaab is now creating realistic and abstract paintings. His style keeps progressing and he is one of the special elephants who really enjoys expressing himself through art vs. those who choose to eat their wooden paint brushes.

Aet

This is an abstract painting painted by elephant artist, Aet, from the National Elephant Institute in Lampang Northern Thailand, which have the main entity responsible for cooperation in conserving Thai Elephants. Aet is a highly confident 12 years old male elephant, and according to his trainer, his confidence turns to stubbornness at times; however he is also such an expressive elephant. After 2 years of training with his mahout and art teacher, he used his trunk to create a unique brush stroke which makes Aet's abstract paintings distinctive with his own style.

Punpetch

This is abstract red/green/yellow painted by elephant artist, Punpetch, from Maetaman Elephant Camp in Chiang Mai Northern Thailand. Punpetch is an 8 year old male who loves to paint abstracts and took his first art lesson when he was 2 years old. In 2003, Punpetch took part in an art exhibition with other well-known local artists at the Chiang Mai University Art Museum. His works have also been exhibited at galleries in Europe in addition to the Kawamura Art Museum in Japan. He's quite a special guy!
